The Coventry Litany of Reconciliation
The Coventry Litany of Reconciliation
In 1940, the medieval Cathedral in Coventry, England was bombed leaving nothing standing but charred walls. Afterwards, Provost Howard had the words ‘Father Forgive’ inscribed on the wall behind the altar of the ruined building. This became the response for the litany of reconciliation that is prayed in Coventry every weekday at noon and by other communities around the world. ‘Father, forgive’ acknowledges that we are all in need of forgiveness and it is the calling of all to work towards reconciliation so that atrocities do not continue.
